Project "Music for All" - The inclusion of babies in music

Written by: Daniel Nunes, Giovani Lacerda, Sabrina Santos e Vanessa Paiva

Project "Music for All" - The inclusion of babies in music.

The "Music for All" project, coordinated by Professor of the UFMG Music School, Bethany Parizzi, has the following objectives: a musical inclusion of babies born premature and to continue the musical development process of these babies.

Such a project is beneficial to the entire academic community, therefore, can serve as an object of observation in various academic areas that are developed at the university.

The holding consists of classes taught to babies by Bethany Parizzi coordinator at the Musicalization Children's Center (CMI), or at the Hospital das Clínicas.

From this are classes held with a maximum of three babies, who are part of the research, these classes contribute to the "stimulation of babies by vocal interaction, body and instrumental, which provides auditory and visual-motor experiences the children”.

The findings are great in all spheres, showing excellent results in psycho-motor development of premature babies, accelerating in many cases the growth and creation of concepts associated with certain phases of the baby because they usually take a little longer to be formed in premature babies.

The project is already well known nationally and internationally, to being presented at the Second Interdisciplinary Seminar on the health of the baby, held in Paris in July 2011 and published in the electronic media of the event.

Eating at the UFMG

In the Pampulha's UFMG campus, we have many options to have a lunch, a break or a dinner. There are options to meet the most diverse tastes and to satisfy every people from the smallest to the biggest huger in many price ranges. If you want to save money, BANDEX is probably your best  choice, considering that the prices are, in general, less than 4,15 reais. For those who have sopport from FUMP, the prices may be incredibly low, many students don't even pay.BANDEX food is not actually among the tastier choices but its food is often considered really good if you compare it with many other restaurants of the same category. If you want some better options, the prices are way more salty. The prices at the few "price-by-weight" restaurant are usually at the 20-35 reais per kg range which is not economic at all. The alternative is eating at the many canteens throughout the campus which are usually cheap.

A basic comparison:

Eating a PF at BH (a set meal) will probably cost you 12 reais. Eating at UFMG will custs you 7-8 reais.

UFMG studies air quality

Written by: Daniel Nunes, Giovani Lacerda, Sabrina Santos e Vanessa SIlva.

*Article concerning the week of 14 October. The teacher had not said what might have been posted directly on the blog, but the group had sent him the article by e-mail and forgot to post it on the blog later.

Nearly half (49.3%) of the vehicle fleet of Belo Horizonte is releasing pollutants into the air above the limit allowed by the National Environmental Council (CONAMA), which damages people's health and leaves the city dirtier. That's what the survey found Vehicle Inspection, coordinated by the State Environmental Foundation (FEAM), in partnership with UFMG and the town hall, held between June 2003 and November 2005. Of the 1500 vehicles inspected, 751 (49 3%) failed the test. The project coordinator, Elisete Gomides Dutra, said that the study is considered a sampling of research and can be extended to the entire municipal fleet.

The study also found that the great villains of the atmosphere remain the diesel cars. Of 321 trucks, buses, trucks and vans that use the fuel, 279 (87%) launched in the air a quantity of black smoke above the CONAMA limit. Inspections were carried out in various parts of the city, but during the research, the offenders were not fined. An error caught the attention of technicians Feam: many trucks had violated the seal of the fuel pump. Tampering increases the power of the vehicles, but the engine releases more gases in the atmosphere.

"The results show the need for educational campaigns and expansion of surveillance of diesel vehicles, particularly trucks," says Elisete. The number of cars fueled with alcohol failed the survey is also high: 116 of the 196 tested, which represents 59.2%. The percentage (35.3%) of those using gasoline can not be considered low: 356 cars of 1,007 inspected.

The survey was conducted in three stages. At first, the targets were the exhaust system, check for leaks or air intake, and the sealing of fuel injection pump setting. On Monday, the rotation test was made with the vehicle being accelerated slowly until it reaches the maximum free rotation, in order to ensure stability in the range recommended by the manufacturer. Finally, the test with the car stopped, for measuring the amount of expelled smoke, with the engine at idle and at full throttle.

The balance of the field work was not celebrated by the technicians of Feam, which warn of the evils caused by air pollution. "The pollutants are toxic. They increase the risk of respiratory disease, cause irritation to the eyes, nose and skin. Also, leave the ugliest city, dirtier," said Beverly Wen Yuh Liu, Technical Monitoring Division GIS (Dimog) of Feam.

Among the hazardous gas is carbon monoxide, resulting from incomplete fuel combustion, and is odorless and colorless. It causes headache, discomfort, fatigue, palpitations, dizziness and reduced reflexes. Indoors, it can lead to death. Another pollutant generated by incomplete combustion and evaporation of fuel is a hydrocarbon, which causes irritation to eyes, nose and skin, as well as being carcinogenic.

The cabbie Wilson José dos Reis, 45, who runs every day through the city streets, charges the government more campaigns against pollution, but also calls for greater responsibility to the owners of cars: "In the city become more ugly, are many diseases that bring pollutants. There must be supervision and greater awareness of drivers. " The auxiliary and administrative Hasley Francisco Rodrigues, 30, also claims: "The city is very polluted bad because it causes a number of diseases.?".

The Municipal Deputy Secretary for the Environment has been fighting the greenhouse gas emissions with the operation oxygen, established in 1988. Currently, four teams inspect diesel vehicles on the main routes of transit and the end points of the bus. According to the Control of Vehicular Pollution manager of the secretariat, Bernadette Carvalho Gomes, around 35 000 vehicles are fueled with diesel in BH.

She explains that the operation seeks to close the siege of these cars, because they are the ones who run the city. "They just do not stand in the garage. They are the ones that carry more weight and more wear suffer. Many do not have proper maintenance. Therefore, the target of our attention for years," he says, warning that the fine ranges from $ 200 to R $ 1.9000: "The test is done in front of the driver".

Written by: Daniel Nunes, Giovani Lacerda, Sabrina Santos e Vanessa Paiva

Paul Iscold, professor of UFMG, and the pilot Paul Bonhomme
Researchers at the Aviation Research Centre (ARC), the School of UFMG Engineering, are part of the team that has just won the world championship Red Bull Air Race competition where aircraft reach speeds of up to 360 km / h at low altitude.

The aircraft is flown by Britain's Paul Bonhomme and came second in the final round, which was held in Las Vegas (USA). The team got the highest score of the year in the competition.

The group is coordinated by Professor Paulo Iscold, Department of Mechanical Engineering. He has been involved since 2008 with the competition Red Bull. In 2010, he and his team have joined the Bonhomme team.

The project encompasses two main objectives: promoting improvements to enhance aerodynamics and speed of the aircraft; Optimizing the aircraft trajectories. This entire process relies on the help and collaboration of course aerodynamic engineering students.

The initiative as a whole has been consecrated, and the plane has gained awards in other competitions, including competitions held in Brazil.

Extra courses at COLTEC-UFMG

There are many different extra courses at COLTEC, groups for learn or practice something. Moreover, these courses were thought to help the people that study at COLTEC, or UFMG, or peoples of other places that want to learn.

These courses can be, for example, course of English or another language. The project that offers this type of course is the COLI (COLTEC Idiomas).

Other course that exists at COLTEC is a course for to teach the people to use the program Solidworks.

In addition, for the students at COLTEC there are other activities, for example: group of robotic, group of theater, among other groups.

Sport

Sport

Authors: Henrique, Rander e Henzo

Sports play a major whole in our daily life, even at school.
Lets say Coltec is a different school, one of the few I know that actually cares about  P.E for adolescents in high school. Skip the classes and your grade is not going to be as good.
We also have (along with CP) (I'm indeed proud to say that) an official sport!
Whoa, you  didn't see that coming... Yeah. This (not so popular) practice nicknamed Paredas, officially Paredão evolved from children's games to become a nearly professional sport - nah, just kidding. Its origin dates back to ancient times when students from CP (I guess) found out that hitting a ball against a wall repeatedly could be fun. Admittedly, it is. Nowadays, Paredas has come to Coltec and is now very widespread among students of both CP and Coltec.
Its practice consists of 1 (two is better) or more players bouncing a ball against the floor intending to hit it against the wall thereafter in a one-two game.

Similar sport: Squash is consisted out of similar principles (not so similar though) however the player uses a bat to hit the ball.
Paredas is love Paredas is life.

Coltec's Astronomy Group

When you look to the sky what do you feel? Big? Small? Both? In the last months some students of Coltec started an idea that got big proportions: A group focused in the study of astronomy and related phenomena. Moreover, we asked one of the creators of the group some questions like: "Why the idea?", "The biggest challenge yet" etc, and here's what he said:

"Coltec's Astronomy Club was created during a conversation between me (Lucas), Raul and Bruna. Raul has had an idea about creating different groups in Coltec, and one of his ideas was the Astronomy Club. We had just an idea in mind, so we had a conference on Skype and decided the mechanics of the group.
When we first advertised it, dozens of students got interested, and we decided to take it seriously. The first challenge was to find a professor to help us. We've found out that Villani studied Astronomy on college, and he proposed to help us. Our most recently challenge was to fix Coltec's telescope. Fortunately, we managed to get the contact info of the man who had built it, and now he is helping us too. Challenges keep coming, but the hardest part was to give the project an inicial impetus."

As we know the search of knowledge is endless because of that our duty as "New World" makers is to search oportunities to build a brighter future to next generations.
